James Baldwin is an iconic author for our time. He was a writer who gave the world countless poignant essays, shorts stories, novels, plays, and poems during his 63 years. James Baldwin was apart of the black arts movement with fellow greats like Amari Baraka, Melvin Van Peebles, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Sonia Sanchez, Etherige Knight, etc in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. With roots in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement, James Baldwin and other American artists in the trenches sought to create politically engaging work that collectively explored the African-American cultural and historical experience.

This art exhibit will further that experience & feature an array of artists from all over the country. In the creative spirit of James Baldwin & his comrades, we continue using the arts as tools for change. This exhibit features visual art inspired by the works of Baldwin. Artists were tasked with finding something from James Baldwin's life as a muse. The Fire Next Time is a novel by James Baldwin published in 1963.
